Community Health Partnership

Every 10 minutes, one woman dies on account of pregnancy or childbirth in Nigeria, giving a total of 53,000 per year. This means about 800 women die in every 100,000 live births.

Nigeria’s newborn death rate (neonatal mortality) – 528 per day – is one of the highest in the world. More than a quarter of the estimated 1 million children who die under the age of 5 years annually in Nigeria die during the first 28 days of life (neonatal period). About 9 out of 10 of newborn deaths are preventable.

About 5.3 million children are born yearly in Nigeria, that is about 11,000 everyday. One million of these children die before the age of 5 years.

Causes of maternal death as a percentage of total

maternal death

As seen in the chart, most causes of maternal death are preventable.

As a government,

  • We can address the current shortage of high-quality human resources for maternal health at all skill levels.
  • We can strengthen programs and policies that improve women’s and girls’ access to safe sexual and reproductive health services.
  • We can address the infrastructural deficiencies that characterize the Nigerian maternal health system.

Government alone can not do it!

As a private organization,

  • We should educate and empower women and girls about maternal health issues.
  • We should launch professional, well-informed advocacy groups to call for action on maternal health.
  • We should create strategic alliances between groups representing maternal health, as that will open doors to political and financial support.

Nigerian health system relies heavily on Community Health Workers & volunteers.

As an individual,

  • You can reduce user fees for maternal health care services especially for low income earners.
  • You can educate adolescents (males and females) in schools on maternal health and unsafe abortion.
  • You should make personal effort to improve your knowledge, skills and ability to deliver high quality maternal health education and services in your area of expertise.

Safe Motherhood Initiative (SMI): How it works

Health2Wealth model of SMI provides a continuum of care ranging from maternal to neonatal health coverage. Women from the local communities are selected and trained as #MyFamilyHero Community Health Workers (CHWs). CHWs are trained to provide health education to women in their communities as well as to provide basic care for expecting mothers and newborn children. Training may be online or offline based.

Health Education:

CHWs are trained by Health2Wealth and Partners to teach women about healthy behaviors surrounding newborn health. They give expecting mothers printed/digital materials and verbal health messages in one-on-one consultations during their home visits that occur both before and after birth. In addition, CHWs hold group meetings for pregnant women and grandmothers every four months in each village. CHWs give information and demonstrations about important topics such as nutrition, preparation for delivery, breastfeeding, keeping the baby warm, and cleanliness. CHWs also ensure that mothers know how to recognize danger signs in their babies and that the mothers know when they should seek care from a CHW or health facility.

Support in Home Care:

Trained female Community Health Workers (CHWs) advise and assist mothers in neonatal care at home. CHWs are trained to identify and to treat neonatal morbidities like asphyxia, prematurity, low birth weight, sepsis, hypothermia, and infection. CHWs visit new mothers and their babies repeatedly during the first crucial weeks of life equipped with a neonatal care kit that includes simple but life-saving equipment such as blankets, a resuscitation mask, soap, a thermometer, scale, and medications to manage infections. In addition to diagnosing problems, CHWs monitor the baby’s growth and ensure that the mother has support in healthy behaviors such as early breastfeeding, keeping the baby warm, and maintaining good hygiene.

Sickness Management:

In addition to providing basic interventions, care, and treatment at home, CHWs are trained to detect serious conditions and illnesses and to refer families to local health facilities.
